Institute of National Importance

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP): A public engineering institution in Kharagpur, West Bengal, established by the government of India in 1951. IIT KGP, the first of the IITs to be established, offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Engineering. The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has the largest campus and the most departments among all IITs. The motto of IIT KGP is "Yoga Karmasu Kaushalam", that means "Excellence in action is Yoga" in English. IIT KGP is located 120 km west of Kolkata, and 5 km away from the Kharagpur railway station, in the Hijli village, just outside the town of Kharagpur. Admission to BTech, BArch degree, five-year Dual Degree (integrated Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology) and five-year integrated Master of Science courses at IIT Kharagpur are based on IIT-JEE, Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination. And, admissions to MTech programmes are made through the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) entrance exam.

IIT Kharagpur offers Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM), LL.B in Intellectual Property Law (LL.B Honors in IP Law), Master of City Planning (MCP), and Post Graduate Diploma in Maritime Operation and Management (PGDMOM) along with postgraduate programmes such as M.Tech, M.Sc and MBA. As part of its doctoral education programme IIT KGP also offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD). The institute also offers Dual Degree programs in selected pairs of branches or specializations. IIT Kharagpur has an entrepreneurship school (Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship), a management school (Vinod Gupta School of Management), and a law school (Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law) on its premises. The Law school has been opened in collaboration with George Washington University.

The School of Medical Science and Technology in IIT KGP is the first and only one of its kind in India where MBBS graduates are trained in art and science of medical research to provide a platform for research and interdisciplinary teaching in the field of medical science and technology. The institute organizes a techno-management festival known as Kshitij. The annual robotics competition "Robotix" held by IIT Kharagpur is organised during the biggest techno-management festival of Asia. IIT Kharagpur organises the largest student managed socio-cultural fest of Asia known as Spring Fest. The annual socio-cultural fest is held in January.

Indian Statistical Institute: Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by Indian Statistical Institute act 1959 of the Parliament of India. Until 1959, the institute was associated with the University of Calcutta. ISI has special service units in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Tezpur. The Kolkata campus offers bachelor's level degree course in Statistics (B.Stat), master's degree course in Statistics (M.Stat), Mathematics (M.Math), Computer Science (M.Tech), Quality Reliability and Operations Research (M.Tech) and Quantitative Economics (MS).

Almost all buses and minibuses that go to Dunlop Bridge pass by the ISI Kolkata campus. From Howrah station catch buses that go to Nimta or Belgharia or Rathtala. Get off the bus at the Bon Hooghly bus stop to enter the residential campus of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. The Statistical or ISI bus stop is located just outside the entrance of the main office campus. It is better to hire a taxi if you are coming from the Dum Dum Airport (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport) or from the Sealdah railway station.

University of Burdwan: University of Burdwan (Burdwan University/বর্ধমান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is an autonomous state university established in 1960 by the West Bengal Government. There are 139 affiliated colleges in the districts of Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura, and Hooghly under the university. Students are admitted through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination for admission to the Bachelor of Technology or B.Tech programmes, and through GATE exam for admission to the Master of Technology or M.Tech programmes. The University of Burdwan has a Directorate of Distance Education (DDE,BU) for those who cannot undergo post graduate studies in full-time mode. West Bengal government approved University Institute of Technology at the university campus is a professional engineering college under the Burdwan University.

University of Calcutta: The University of Calcutta (Calcutta University/কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় or CU), the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style university, was established on 24 January 1857 in Kolkata. Calcutta University is a state-government administered urban-based affiliating and research university. Its central campus Ashutosh Shiksha Prangan is in College Street, where the administrative work is done. The university has a total of 14 campuses - Sahid Khudiram Siksha Prangan in Alipore, Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan (University College of Science, or, Ballygunge Science College) located on Ballygunge Circular Road in Ballygunge, Rashbehari Shiksha Prangan (University College of Science and Technology, or, Rajabazar Science College) located on Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road in Rajabazar.

The first Chancellor of CU were Governor General Lord Canning. There are four Nobel laureates associated with the University of Calcutta - Rabindra Nath Tagore, Amartya Sen, C. V. Raman and Ronald Ross. Jadavpur UniversityA premier public research and an autonomous state university. Jadavpur University has two campuses - the main campus of JU is in Jadavpur and the other one is in Salt Lake. A three-flamed lamp encircled by lotus petals, designed by one of the great masters at Kala Bhavan in Rabindranath Tagore's Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan (Nandalal Bose), is the emblem of Jadavpur University. The lamp represents knowledge, the three flames represent intellectual training, cultivation of emotions and imagination, and spiritual development, and lotus petals represent fine arts and culture. University of Gour Banga (গৌড়বঙ্গ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়): Established on March 10, 2008 and situated in Malda, West Bengal. Currently there are 22 general degree colleges, 25 B.Ed colleges, 1 Law college, and 1 B.P.Ed. college under the University of Gour Banga in the district of Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur. The university campus offers M.A. in English, Bengali, History, Arabic, Sanskrit, Education and M.Sc. in Mathematics, and various PhD programmes. University of Kalyani: The state-government administered, affiliating and research university, University of Kalyani in Nadia, was established on 1 November 1960. The Kalyani University is 50 km from Kolkata, and 200 meters from the eastern bank of the Ganges. The Administration Building is within 10 minutes walking distance from the nearest Kalyani Ghoshpara railway station. The university offers Post Graduate education and Ph.D. Program in 36 different subjects or disciplines in Engineering & Technology, Science, Arts & Commerce, Management, and Education. University of North Bengal (উত্তরবঙ্গ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়): The main campus of the state university is situated at Raja Rammohanpur between Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport, in the Terai region in Darjeeling, and the second campus is situated at Danguajhar, in Jalpaiguri district in the state of West Bengal. Several General Degree and B.Ed. Colleges under the University of North Bengal spread over the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum in the University of North Bengal is one of the few university museums in India, and has a rich collection of sculpture, manuscripts, paintings, coins, etc.


Presidency University (Formerly Hindu/Hindoo College and Presidency College): The Hindu College was established by the social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Justice Sir Edward Hyde East (the chief promoter of the college), Maharaja Tejchandra Ray of Burdwan, Raja Radhakanta Deb, David Hare (Founder of Hare School), Prasanna Coomar Tagore and Babu Buddinath Mukherjee in 1817. The Hindu College was transformed into Presidency College and became a government institution in 1855. The Presidency College of Bengal was upgraded to the status of a full university in 2010.

Rabindra Bharati University: Rabindra Bharati University was founded on May 8, 1962 at the residential house of Rabindranath Tagore in Calcutta. Rabindra Bharati Museum or Jorasanko Thakurbari housed within the University was the home of Rabindranath Tagore, and the house in which the world famous poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861, and the place where he spent most of his childhood and died on 7 August, 1941. The Rabindra Bharati Museum, an integral part of the university, was established in 1962 by then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University: The Sidho Kanho Birsha University (SKBU) is situated in the western-most district of West Bengal, Purulia. The state university in West Bengal was established on 6 July 2010. SKB University is named after three illustrious tribal leaders, Sidhu Murmu, Kanhu Murmu and Birsha Munda. Currently, there are 25 affiliated colleges under the Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University in the district of Purulia.


West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS or NUJS): The autonomous law university in West Bengal is one of the best elite national law schools in India, was established by the Bar Council of India in 1999 and located in the Salt Lake city of Kolkata. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences offers five-year integrated B.A./B.Sc LL.B (Hons.) program at the undergraduate level and LL.M degree program at the postgraduate level. Admission to the undergraduate programs is based on the rank obtained in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) held jointly by fourteen national law schools. The university also offers MPhil and PhD degrees. There are three research centres under NUJS - Centre for Gender research Law, Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Studies, and Centre for WTO Law.

West Bengal University of Health Sciences: The West Bengal University of Health Sciences offers PhD programme in Modern System of Medicine, Ayurvedic System of Medicine, Homeopathic System of Medicine, Unani System of Medicine, Dental Education, Nursing Education, Pharmacy Education, Speech Therapy and Education, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Prosthetics-Orthotics. West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences: Bengal Veterinary College, the second oldest veterinary college in India, was established in 1893, functioned under the University of Calcutta. In 1974, the college was merged with Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Nadia. In 1995, the Bengal Veterinary College turned into the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences by a legislative act.

Admissions to 5-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H), 4-year Bachelor of Technology in Dairy Technology or B.Tech (D.T) courses are based on WBJEE rank. West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT or UTech): In 2000, the university began its operations at the West Bengal State Archives Building, 43 Shakespeare Sarani in Kolkata. Within one and a half decades the university gain strength of over two hundred affiliated colleges in West Bengal. Vidyasagar University (বিদ্যাসাগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়): Vidyasagar University, named after the great educationist and social worker of 19th century Bengal, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, was established on 29 September 1981 in the district of Paschim Medinipur. Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University Exam Results and Admission

The Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University is named after the great social reformer and 19th-century Rajbongshi (primitive, indigenous community of Assam) leader Thakur Panchanan Barma (Roy Saheb). All the colleges of Cooch Behar districts and Alipurduar Sub Divisions will be affiliated to the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University (CBPBU). At present, the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University functions from its camp-office (temporary campus) at Central Farmers Hostel, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari, Coochbehar, in the state of West Bengal.

The new campus of the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University is on Vivekananda Road on the way to Cooch Behar Airport (IATA-COH, ICAO-VECO), near Cooch Behar College. The university was established in 2012.
